GMGI Research Team Awarded Federal Funding

GMGI’s research team achieved a number of significant milestones in 2019 with the awarding of its first federal grants and MA State earmark funds. GMGI’s Fisheries Research Scientist, Tim Sullivan, together with co-investigators James Collins (MIT) and Arun Dhar (University of Arizona) were awarded an Exploratory Research Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture for their proposal to develop accurate, sensitive, rapid, CRISPR-based diagnostic tests for two devastating viral diseases that impact the shrimp aquaculture industry.

Tim Sullivan, in partnership with scientists at the MA Division of Marine Fisheries Shellfish Purification Plant, was successful in attracting state earmark funds for the assessment of male-specific coliphage as an indicator of the presence of shellfish Norovirus in the National Shellfish Sanitation Plan.

GMGI Science Director Andrea Bodnar and her collaborators Gary Wessel (Brown University) and Stephen Watts (University of Alabama) were awarded a National Science Foundation EDGE Grant for a project to develop functional genomic tools to advance sea urchins as models for scientific research.

Our mission is to conduct world-class marine biotechnology research which expands the regional economy.
