Academy Graduate Earns Accolades as Zhu Millman Scholar

For one student, a graduation certificate wasn’t the only accolade she received on stage at the Cape Ann Museum. This year marked the first time that a graduate was honored as the Zhu Millman Scholar of the Gloucester Biotechnology Academy graduating class, selected for both outstanding academic and leadership distinction. The award is named for Academy supporters Chi-Chi Zhu and Robert Millman.

The Class of 2018 Zhu Millman Scholar award was given to Sara Corchado, the class Valedictorian. Throughout the academic year, Sara was a natural leader in the classroom, often assuming additional responsibilities to help her classmates and instructors. A graduate of Gloucester High School, Sara recently completed her Gloucester Biotechnology Academy internship at MIT in Cambridge, working in the laboratory of Jim Collins, PhD. She was offered an extension of her MIT internship, where she will continue to work after graduation while planning her long-term goal of attending medical school.

Robert and Chi-Chi are both seasoned professionals in the world of biotech. Robert is the co-founder and former CEO of Semma Therapeutics in Cambridge. Chi-Chi was part of the founding team at Celera Genomics and currently she is responsible for search and evaluation of opportunities in Neuroscience in the Business Development & Licensing Group at Novartis. They were introduced to GMGI in 2017, and more recently they made a generous, multi-year commitment to the Academy program.

GMGI, and Gloucester Biotechnology Academy in particular, are deeply grateful to Chi-Chi Zhu and Robert Millman for their generous support. We look forward to honoring graduates in the coming years as Zhu Millman Scholars, recognizing excellence in academic distinction and leadership.
